Its Wednesday – that can only mean one thing another board shorts insight. This week we look at Bruce Irons the man behind the boardshort. The Volcom Annihilator Boardshort
Last week we looked at the Billabong Parko endorsed boardshorts. A quick congratulations to Joel for his recent win at the Billabong Jefferies Bay pro. Where he also scored a perfect 10 with an epic wave ride and barrel. Nice one!
Volcom team member Bruce Irons is the younger brother of 3 times world champion and well know surfer Andy Irons.
Bruce has been at the top of surfing for a number of years often suffering like Parko at the hand of Kelly Slaters dominance. Bruce has yet to win the ASP tour but is famous for his other wins. In 2001 he defeated Kelly Slater to win the pipemasters then has struggled with some inconsistent results. Bruce has placed well in the Pipemasters events over the years and in 2004 won the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau in waves over 40ft. Some great footage of this all over the web.
Bruce most well known for his huge aerial stunts did not win his first ASP event until 2008, where he one the Rip Curl Pipemasters in Bali. Finally cementing in the minds of all that Bruce is an amazing surfer. Not all surfers and their styles suit competition but results do help show your ability to sponsors on paper. Bruce is also lucky enough not only to be sponsored by Volcom but also by skate shoes company DC shoes. The Relentless NASS & Wakestock Music and action sports festivals have now come to a close for 2009.
Early reports are that they were great events despite the weather, good work to all for turning out. If you werent at NASS a skateboard and bmx orientated event, you may well have been up at the Relentless Wakestock event at Abersoch in Wales – where I hear the weather was even worse. (Tents flying around everywhere). The music and party atmosphere pulled everyone through and its only rain. Wakestock also celebrated its 10th birthday this year so congratulations to all involved with organising the event over the years, for turning it into a great rave in north Wales.
If you couldn’t make it to Nass below is a little snippit of pro skater Christian Heise and his flatland freestyle skateboard routine from this year.

The boardshorts this summer come in some wicked colours and designs. Each year we see better materials, construction and more inspired lifestyle graphics. As we move through July and August every Wednesday on the Hardcloud blog I am going to be looking at the man behind the boardshort.
With the ASP tour about to hit the colder waters of South Africa – (I dont think they will be wearing boardies- the southern ocean was freezing in Feb and its now their winter)
This post stems from the current tour leader Joel Parkinson -
Parko as he is known to the people and through the products he endorses - As Billabong sponsored team rider - Parko has Billabong boardshorts, tees and tailpads all carrying his signature. This is Parkos 9th year on the tour 8, of which have been within the top 20. With his highest placing a 2nd in 2004. The last 2 years have seen Parko in 4th place consecutively. During the Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown in 2008 he managed to score the ‘perfect 20′ one of only two ever given in competition. This boy is on fire at the moment – Is this possibly the year for the 27 year old from Australia.
The hardcloud team will all be watching the next 5 events very closely to see who is crowned the 2009 champion.
Parko’s boardshort this year is a bold 3 colour design taking inspirations from the Billabongs ongoing collaboration with Metallica and their aggressive hard edged fonts. You might not be able to Rip like Parko but this is a good place to start.

So where did these useful garments grow from.
